The Christian Brothers, as they are commonly known, chiefly work for the evangelisation and education of youth, but are involved in many ministries, especially with the poor. Their first school was opened in Waterford, Ireland, in 1802. Br Philip Pinto is the current superior general of the Congregation, and head of its Congregational Leadership Team that is based in Rome.

They are sometimes confused with the Brothers of the Christian Schools, or "De LaSalle Christian Brothers," founded by Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle, a completely separate though similar order. For the sake of clarity, Rice's congregation is sometimes called the Irish Christian Brothers.

Edmund Rice

Edmund Rice was born in Callan, Co. Kilkenny, in 1762 and died in Waterford in 1844. As a young man, Edmund went to Waterford to work with his uncle, Michael Rice, a merchant and ship-chandler. Edmund had the necessary personality, talents and dedication to be a very successful businessman and, soon, his uncle entrusted him with the management of the entire firm. Eventually, he took out ownership and was on his way to being a very wealthy man.

When Edmund's wife died after an accident in 1789, he began to devote himself more and more to prayer and charitable work, especially with the poor and marginalised. He was especially drawn to the plight of poor children whose parents could not afford to send them to the paying schools of the time.

When his handicapped daughter reached adulthood, Edmund Rice made provision for her and resolved to go to Rome to enter a monastic congregation and serve God in prayer and silence. However, his great compassion and concern were also drawn to the human, spiritual and educational plight of the children of Ireland who had no opportunity.
He built and opened his first school in 1802 and over the next twenty years a considerable number of men from all walks of life began to join him. Eventually, they resolved to form a new Religious Congregation (Christian Brothers) which was formally approved by Pope Pius VII in 1820. Edmund saw his congregation grow in Ireland, England and Australia. He died, 29th August 1844. His reputation for holiness spread rapidly and he was Beatified by Pope John Paul II in October, 1996.

The Christian Brothers Mission Statement

In this 21st century, we fell moved by Edmund Rice to promote among all children experiencing systemic and other forms of operation, the freedom to celebrate both their unique giftedness in creative, life-giving ways, as well as the glory of their essential relationship with the universe as their home.

To this end we recognise our need to grow sister/brotherliness that reflects our multicultural milieu. The Capital Project has built this school as an English medium school and the Christian Brothers were requested to take over the school. The Brothers acquired the property and building on 15th Nov., 1959 the first Christian Brother to be involved with the school was bro. J. Crease.

By Jan. 1960, people for classes 3 to 8 were being admitted the first Principal was Bro. Morrisssey. The new school opened on 1st Feb., 1960. 41 pupils were present on the occasion.

Official support to the school soon came from the Punjab Government. To quote the Punjab Chief Minister of the day, Pratap Singh Kairon, "Another commendable step in the development of the town(of Chandigarh) is the establishment of two educational institutes for boys and girls in the shape of St. John's High School in Sector 7-E(now 26) and Carmel Convent School in Sector 9.These schools fulfill a long-felt need for better educational facilities in the capital."

By the end of 1960, the grounds were being laid out. As part of the greening of Chandigarh, the school campus was soon the setting for flowering trees, colorful shrubs and a variety of roses-a feature that we are still very proud of.

In 1961 application for affiliation of St. John's to the Indian School Examination Certificate. The first batch for the I.C.S.E appeared in December 1963.They secured 100% passes. By now the number of pupils in the school had crossed the 500 mark.

By the beginning of the new school year of 1966, St. John's saw a change in Principal. Bro. Morrissey ended his term to be replaced by Bro. O'Shea who was to remain for 5 years.100% success in the Indian School Certificate Examination in 1965 with all boys securing 1st Divisions was a fitting tribute to Bro. Morrissey on his departure from St. John's. By now the roll call in the school had crossed 600.

A new Principal had arrived in St. John's in the person of Bro. Tynan in 1971.The years following saw a an annual increase in the no. of boys on the roll. During this time the school magazine The Soaring Eagle saw the light of Day.

1977 saw a new principal arriving to carry on the good work of Bro. Tynan, in the person of Bro. Walsh. By this time the school had switched to The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education and the final class in the school as now to be the class X.

In 1980 Bro. Bela became Principal of St. Johns. Another Development was the functioning of the SJOBA (St. Johns Old Boys Association).

At the end of Bro. Bela's Principal ship in 1986,a new Principal was appointed for St. John's. He was Bro. Whitening. Plans were drawn up to erect a new assembly hall and extra classrooms as a new classroom was being added each year.

1988 saw a change in Principal in the person of Bro. Pinto and very soon a new two storied block as well as a hall came up. By now numbers on the roll had crossed 1200. Bro. Pinto introduced Computer Education, initiated the Learning Centre and launched the "Galaxy". To cope with the tremendous pressure for admissions, the need for a new section was felt and another section was added to two to junior classes and thus the "C" section came into existence.

In 1996 Bro. C. D'Abreu took over as Principal. Since then St. John's has seen rapid change. Bro. D'Abreu intiated the CLIP programme and opened "Horizon" for the mentally challenged children.

In 2001 Mrs. P. Cheema, with several years of administrative experience became the Principal and under her guidance St. John's became Chandigarh's no.1 School and was awarded The National Computer Literacy Award in the category of private schools

In 2006-07 academic year Mrs. Kavita Das took over as the new Principal and is the Principal up to date.

The School Achievers

Ayush Goel (6 A) 3rd in State Level Competition
Rohan ( 6 A) Ist in Race organized by NIPER
Vardhan (6A) Best Fielder in Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament
Rishab Singla (7 B) 2nd in Robotics Olympiad (Primary Category)
Damanbir (8B) 1st in Aerospace Quiz
Abhinav Uppal (9A) 2nd in State Level Science Exhibition
Shivam Goyal(9A) 2nd in State Level Science Exhibition
Shivan Kaul Sahib (9B) Awarded Rs 5000/- in CLAP Programme in New Delhi
Kamal Singh Dhillon (9B) Awarded Rs 5000/- in CLAP Programme in New Delhi
Anhad Jai Singh(9 C) 3rd in Indian Robotics Olympiad (Junior Category)
Akash Kaura (9 C) 2nd in State Level Science Exhibition
Harshavardhan (9C) 2nd in State Level Science Exhibition
Ajitesh Nibber (9D) 3rd in Indian Robotics Olympiad (Junior Category)
Ishaan Preet Singh (9D) 1st in Aerospace Intelligence Quiz
2nd in State Level Science Exhibition
Rajat Dixit (9D) 2nd in State Level Science Exhibition
Aayush Gopal Dawra (9 D) 2nd in State Level Science Exhibition
Sehaj Bir Singh Sidhu (9 D) 2nd in World Game Masters Tournament 2007 (North Division)

Extra Curricular Activities

SPORTS
The ‘Cricket Academy which started in 1998, entered into a joint venture with Chandigarh Cricket association and opened its doors to cricketers across Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali
The Squash court facility which is open to boys has received an enthusiastic response.
Riding School is the latest addition to the plethora of sports offered
The School also provides facilities for Table Tennis, Basketball, Football, Badminton, Athletics and Tennis.

ART ROOM
Students are taught all the latest techniques of art from CAD to Air Brushing, Silk and screen printing, designing, layout, still life water colours, oil pastels, oil painting and acrylic.

MUSIC
St. John’s has a very well equipped Music room with a grand Piano, Guitars (electric&
